El Salvador, meaning The Savior in Spanish, is a beautiful country blanketed with the flora and fauna one would expect from a tropical region.
Unfortunately, crime is rampant and gangs have a firm grasp over most communities. Citizens live in constant fear of being harrassed, robbed, and even murdered. Children are recruited into gangs, and then trapped for life committing heinous crimes from which they can never escape. I've lost several friends due to gangs.
Despite the crime, the country has a lot to offer. There are volcanos, beaches, and some of the most kind-hearted individuals I have met.
I was granted to the opportunity to experience life as a local for two years while volunteering on different projects throughout the country. I collaborated with ecclesiastical leaders, worked among gangs, and interacted with everyone in between.
